Parallels

1 Russia cuts off gas pipeline through Ukraine.
2 Putin endorses this action.
3 Ukraine and Russia blame each other for the ensuing crisis in Europe.
4 Chuckles reads article and wonders how this is George Bush's fault.

This gem made me giggle: "U.S. national security adviser Stephen Hadley warned Moscow that using energy exports to threaten its neighbors will undermine its international standing." Any American diplomat would hopefully acknowledge the silliness of this statement, but also how appropriate it is. After all, can any other country be more of an expert in undermining its international standing through unilateral and unpopular actions than the USA?

In the meantime, I hope this gets resolved quickly and with international transparency. I do not want to see news of people freezing to death because Putin wants to extort Europe.

In unrelated news, congratulations to Senator Franken. I expect to hear about Secretary of State Stewart soon.
