Chicago Dogs in My Kitchen

Ingredients:
Coleman's Mustard
Pickle Spears
Mt. Olive Emerald Relish
Mt. Olive Hot Pickled Banana Peppers
Diced Onion
Celery Salt
Hebrew National Dinner Franks
Buns

Well, almost. The dinner franks are too big and the peppers aren't quite right, but they are the closest I could find at the neighborhood grocery store. Other than that, pretty damn close.

Hey, a friend is having a barbecue that evening, but we can definitely hang out.

I forgot that it should have been a poppy seed bun, but we do what we must with what we have.

Reasonable compromise- the kosher dog is usually a little aggressive for chicago style, but you want a beefy dog that is a little reserved and not as salty, but kosher dogs are awesome, so there really is no problem.

I'll mostly be on the north lawn of the white house. Probably with at least a couple thousand friends.

and yes, kosher dogs rule. Salt is good, that is you mammalian heritage.

I bought a bunch of Coleman's on clearance a few months ago. Two jars into it, I'm still not sure whether I like it. I'm with you on the celery salt, though, that's really what holds everything else together.

shouldn't this be a 'delicious or disgusting' post + thread?

Keep things orderly, people. sheesh. do I have to get AG in here?

Kathleen wins the comments thread. Again.

UC is supposed to publish Superdawg photos with post soon. Or so he says.

Good timing...I'm making these guys tonight and would have forgotten the celery salt otherwise!

Actually, Chuckles has the good Superdawg photos. That would be a good exercise in compare and contrast for this post.

I think the problem with the hotdogs is getting the dinner franks. The normal Hebrew National franks are perfect for chicago dogs, but the dinner franks are more knockwurst sized. I understand the need to keep one's franks proportional to one's wiener, but sometimes too much meat fills up the bun to a painful degree.

Had the same thing last night with some uninitiated. They asked for ketchup. Sometimes, it is just hard to not be in Chicago...

Adorable Girlfriend said...

Exactly.

Or so he says...

Cobag.

Yes, I am glad there was no ketchup on that list. I am a tolerant man but even I have my limits.

Chuckles said...

I agree with the Uncanny Canadian about the size of the franks. I should have gone for normal hot dog size. They would fit better in the bun.

Brando is also absolutely correct. Ketchup is the taste killer.

My grandmother used to say, "If it's bad enough to need ketchup you shouldn't be eating it."

I like ketchup and I don't care if you nerds don't.

I hate Superdawg. Hate, hate, hate. It's not a real Chicago experience. It's an overpriced tourist trap.

AG - As a Chicagoan who grew up in the heart of Chicago, I will defend your right to like ketchup til my dying breath even though I'm not a big fan myself.

Chuckles - You should be using Plochman's Mustard. Not Coleman's.

I prefer Beaver brand myself.

Plochman's sounds like something that happens in a bathroom but I'll give it a try if I can find it in DC.
