The front page of today's print edition of the New York Times has a story about Bush's speech to 200 people stating that he fully authorized the CIA secret prison program in which the CIA tortured the captives. Regardless of the supposedly vital nature of the program, it is a clear violation on international law. Torture is illegal.
There are levels to our laws; county ordnances, state/province laws, federal laws, international law. International law specifically outlaws torture. Bush may call it aggressive interrogation all he wants, but he broke the law by authorizing it. This was absolutely illegal. Bush has tried to claim that as President, he is the sole interpreter of the Constitution and the laws of our country. He is absolutely wrong in this statement. I sincerely hope Bush is arrested and brought to trial the day our next president is inaugurated.
So, it is Thursday September 7, 2006 and our President has admitted to breaking international law. I am fine, how are you?

Well remember, we're dealing with hardcore reactionary right-wingers here. To them, international law does not exist, and they are not beholden to it, no matter what treaties we've signed or agreements we've made.

Custom has it that the next president pardons the last president, should the need arise.
Custom also has it that we don't torture people, don't initiate wars, and generally try to at least respect due process.
I think the strategy of letting out enough rope so they can hang themselves is working rather well.
It's not the first time he's broken the law. About a week ago a judge declared the wiretapping with warrants a gross violation of the constitution.

I definitely didn't miss that. This blog has been all over that and other issues in the past. This is merely the latest incident of the Bush administration's rampant assholeness and relates to a level of crimes above and beyond the federal level.
mdhatter: I doubt and hope that I am right that a presidential pardon does not extend to laws broken outside of the US, particularly international law.

I liked it a couple years back when Human Rights Watch suggested that Bush should be arrested for war crimes if he traveled to another country.
I want that to happen so bad it hurts.
