My mom sent me an email saying that there was some kind of explosion in Ellison Bay, WI. Two people were killed and three buildings were destroyed. The Pioneer Store was one of the buildings that was blown up. That store was really neat. It looked like a store from a western movie, with shelves the entire height of the main room and narrow aisles. They even had a pretty decent movie selection and would keep your membership on a 3x5 card in a plastic box. My brother and I went down there for ice cream and root beer the summer after my first freshman year in college. It was neat just to walk down the aisles and look at all the stuff. Heaps of different food items and necessities.
Forgive me (or don't) if I sound callous, but I was more shocked by the store's destruction then the poor saps that bought it. This bugs me. No one deserves to get blown up while they sleep.
The authorities are not yet sure of the cause of the explosion, but I bet it wasn't the terrorists.

PS. This was not meant to detract in any way from the horrible event in Mumbai. I only heard about that when I got home Tuesday night.

I think it was the terrorists. They wanted something more than a primitive card catalog for all that porn they rented. I also think you went there with a girl who refused to make out with you and that's why it's nostalgia time here at FLG, not the other reasons you state.
No. That summer was a summer of missed oppurtunities because I didn't notice that one girl I worked with was practically throwing herself at me.
I realized that waaaaaay too late.
Wisconsin. Could it have anything to do with natural methane.. was just thinking all that cheese must equal lots of cows somewhere...
I'm kidding.
[Probably.]
There was that Senator who wanted to capture the methane from cow farts to prevent it from polluting the atmosphere.
I don't think he was from Wisconsin.
Does anyone else find the humor in the fact that Chuckles always seems to think some women wants him but it never works out because of late trains, mono, etc.?
Chuck man, the only girl wanting you is Pinko. Don't miss your train again on that one...
Oh yeah, it was the terrorists and people who support stem cell research.
Every woman wants me, they just don't know it yet.
Chuckie, I see you are smoking crack and eating 'shrooms again with that talk. Maybe you and Derek Zoolander need to spend sometime apart and outside of each other's pants for you to come back to reality.
Your just jealous, like all my other former lovers.
Yeah and when we get together, we laugh about the size of your small wang, the low duration of your stamina and SMiLE about how good we have it now that we are with real men. It's a great time.
ZING!
You may have this round, but not the WAR!
Cupcake, AG always wins. It's just how it is because much like musical electric chairs, when you lose, you really win!
One of my friends here knew the two people. It was propane.
hi, my name is Ashley.. I just came across your post. It was just really nice to hear about it somewhere else besides in the papers and from my family. I was in the cabin that exploded. If you read any other articles there's one about threee girls that saved each other. All the names and ages are mixed up but the story is pretty much right. I'm actually 16, not 12.. but anyway. I just thought I'd comment and let you know how refreshing it was to see that others care.
Thanks for leaving your comments and my condolences. I also apologize for not noticing your comments earlier.
I stayed in the resort that exploded next to the Pioneer Store (and was the source of the explosion), exactly one month before the explosion. The resort is made up of many cabins and larger buildings. I and my brothers and sister stayed in the largest, which was heavily damaged and later demolished. We were there to celebrate my mom's 75th birthday, as our parents live near there. We had stayed in the resort as we didn't want our mother going to extra trouble to have us stay at their place, a farm just outside Ellison Bay.
The Pioneer Store has been rebuilt, and was dedicated July 1, 2007. The outside looks amazingly similar to the old building, but unfortunately, the inside has been modernized. Gone is the ancient stove in the middle, as well as the musty smell that was so unmistakable. The owner (who lived above the store and plans to do so again) is collecting antiques to begin to regain a bit of the flavor of the old store. If you have anything that might apply, contact the store or virtually anyone in Ellison Bay, as nearly everyone knows everyone else up there.
The resort is rebuilding also.
Thanks for the information, Anonymous! I will be vacationing up in Door County at the end of the month and I will definitely go by the store and check it out.
