The "official" "story" is that the square root of -1 is an "imaginary" number, as though numbers could be imaginary. I think this is patently false.
Observe:
sqrt(-1) is equal to (-1)^(1/2), by definition of square root.
(-1)^(1/2) is equal to (-1)^(2/4), because 1/2 = 2/4.
(-1)^(2/4) is equal to (-1)^(2*(1/4)) because 2/4 = 2*(1/4)
(-1)^(2*(1/4)) is equal to ((-1)^2)^(1/4) by definition of exponent.
((-1)^2)^(1/4) is equal to 1^(1/4) because -1 squared is just 1.
And 1 to the power of anything is just 1.
Therefore the square root of -1 is not some strange "imaginary" "number" concept, but merely 1. However, mathematicians have conspired to suppress my research.
